What should I study?

What should I study?

So you're in high school and you're thinking about what to study for University?
You think you love compturs and math and problem solving so you should go into Computer or Software Engineering!

Pure Engineering

If you really see yourself as an engineer, then by all means go into engineering. However do take a coop program. Also diversify your coop experience! To an extent, I wish I did more of this. I loved software and so I looked at system/network admin or finance or project management jobs in an incorrect manner. I wish I had taken more time to see if I liked those fields. Only after 2-3 years of working in engineering full time do you find out how much of a people person you actually are! Keep in mind a pure engineering program is MUCH MUCH MUCH harder than a computer science or business program in terms of work load and intensity.

Computer Science

I wouldn't take any pure computer science program these days. It really makes no sense. You would be better off taking some kind of dual degree. Perhaps Business / CS or accounting / CS. Why? Because that CS degree doesn't get you very far. You will find a hard time getting those hardware/firmware engineering jobs. The rest of the software field is wide open, so you need an edge. So diversify! If I had to do it all over again, this is what I would do. Most likely, I would take accounting / CS.
